Sunday 5th October saw Saltash Phoenixes take on Plymouth Argaum in a historical match.

The match signalled the first time Saltash Rugby Club have entered a team into NC3 SW (West) league (National Challenge
League).
The Phoenixes travelled across the bridge and put on a great performance. Lauren Bates opening the score line with a wonderful try.
More tries followed by Jo O’Reilly and two from Jess “Spike” Pike, took the Black REd and Golds to 20-0, a comfortable lead but the team continued to push.

Jo O'Reilly scored another try which was beautifully converted by captain Gail Pringle taking us to 27-0. Half time talk over, the Ashes Phoenixes were running up hill. But that didn’t slow anyone down. With some fresh legs supporting the team, Sasha Hare scored another try for the Phoenixes, taking us to 32-0, followed shortly after by Hatti Shipp with another brilliant conversion by Gail Pringle. 39-0
and holding steady.

The defence was strong and Argaum continued to push Saltash hard. Strong in the scrums, pushing through. Ayesha Slader saw a space for
Phoenixes and pushed through for try number 8, taking the score to 44-0. The 9th and final try went to Maya Phipps and was converted this time by Leah Bates.

Final score 0-51 to the Cornish visitors Saltash Phoenixes . The Argaum hosted the Phoenixes beautifully well and joined us to honour
our team and theirs.

Forward of the Match went to Becca Seymour, for being constantly in amongst the play and the Back of the Match went to Jo O’Reilly for pushing through with some fantastic play and pushing through injury and being highly taped up.

Player of the Match went to scrum half Amy Dalton, who coaches praised for continuing to grow in confidence, and lead the play on the pitch,
despite having only started playing last year.

A great start to the season, and a fantastic start to league rugby.

Next week sees Saltash Phoenixes travel to play St Austell Valkyries, keeping the momentum for women’s rugby going!
