Within two minutes Kieran Down replied by kicking a penalty to reduce the visitors lead (3-7). However, another converted try by Topsham extended their lead to 14-3 but Saltash hit back with an excellent try on the right wing by fullback Ryan Cruickshanks which was converted by the reliable boot of Kieran Down. Strong forward play after 27 minutes by Topsham led to another try and two minutes before the interval they secured a bonus point try by centre Batty which was converted by Saunders. Just on halftime Kieran Down took the score to 13-26 with his second penalty of the match.
The second period was evenly contested until a kick ahead after 52 minutes by Topsham resulted in a converted try to put them into a 33-13 lead. Saltash again came back with Andrew Walsh going over in the corner following some good handling (56 minutes) but within 5 minutes the visitors extended their lead to 40-18 with a sixth try that was converted. Undaunted. the Ashes fought back again as Ryan Cruickshanks raced through the Topsham defence to score close to the posts for Kieran Down to add the points (25-40). The home side were really pushing the Topsham side in the closing stages and Max Dennison used his strength to drive over for the last score of a very entertaining game after 74 minutes which was enjoyed by the good sized crowd. Saltash can be proud of their overall display against high riding Topsham with forwards Simon Nance, Ryan Simmons and Max Dennison putting in outstanding performances as well as fullback Ryan Cruickshanks contributing two tries and good line running which earned the home side a bonus point.
